What is Double Pane Glass?
Double-pane glass consists of two panes of glass separated by a spacer and sealed together as a single unit. The space between the panes creates an insulating barrier that helps reduce heat transfer, outside noise, and condensation compared with ordinary single-pane glass.
This product is also called an insulated glass unit, or IGU. You may hear the terms double-pane glass, dual-pane glass, insulated glass, and IGU used interchangeably. Although people commonly call it a double-pane window, the IGU is the sealed glass portion installed inside the window frame.
Depending on the application, an insulated glass unit may include clear glass, Low-E glass, tempered safety glass, decorative grids, or other custom options. Some IGUs also contain insulating gas between the panes to improve thermal performance. Each unit must be manufactured to the correct width, height, thickness, and glass specifications for the existing window or project.
If your double-pane glass is cracked, broken, cloudy, or fogged between the panes, you may not need to replace the entire window. When the frame is still in good condition, the failed insulated glass unit can often be removed and replaced with a new custom-built IGU.
Glass Factory USA manufactures double-pane insulated glass units in Arizona for residential and commercial applications. Whether you need one replacement unit or custom glass for a larger project, we can help determine the appropriate size and glass configuration for the job.
Do You Need New Glass or a Whole New Window?
A foggy, cracked, or damaged double-pane unit does not always mean the entire window must be replaced. If the frame and operating components remain in good condition, Glass Factory USA may be able to manufacture a replacement glass unit that fits the existing window.
Glass-only replacement may work when…
- The glass is cracked or broken
- Moisture is trapped between panes
- The seal has failed
- The existing frame remains sound
Full window replacement may be needed when…
- The frame is severely damaged
- The window no longer opens or closes properly
- There is significant frame deterioration
- The entire assembly is poorly installed

Low-E Double Pane Glass for Arizona
Low-E coatings are designed to help manage solar heat and ultraviolet energy while still allowing natural light through the glass. The right Low-E option depends on the window’s direction, appearance, and desired performance.

Double Pane Glass FAQS
Is double-pane glass the same as an insulated glass unit?
Yes. Double-pane glass is commonly called insulated glass, dual-pane glass, or an insulated glass unit. The abbreviation IGU stands for insulated glass unit. An IGU consists of two panes of glass separated by a spacer and sealed together to create an insulating airspace.
Can you replace double-pane glass without replacing the entire window?
In many cases, yes. If the window frame, sash, and operating components remain in good condition, the damaged or failed insulated glass unit can often be removed and replaced. This allows you to address cracked, foggy, or failed glass without purchasing an entirely new window.
Why is my double-pane glass foggy between the panes?
Fog or moisture between the panes usually indicates that the perimeter seal around the insulated glass unit has failed. Once that seal is compromised, outside air and moisture can enter the space between the panes. Because the moisture is trapped inside the IGU, cleaning the interior and exterior surfaces will not remove it.
Can a foggy insulated glass unit be resealed?
A failed IGU generally needs to be replaced rather than simply resealed. Removing visible moisture does not restore the original factory seal or insulating performance. A properly manufactured replacement unit provides new glass, a new spacer, and a completely new perimeter seal.
Is Low-E glass available for double-pane units?
Yes. Low-E glass can be incorporated into a double-pane insulated glass unit to help manage solar heat and ultraviolet energy while allowing natural light into the property. Low-E options are especially useful for Arizona homes and commercial buildings, although the appropriate coating depends on the window’s location, orientation, and desired appearance.
Do you manufacture custom-size insulated glass units?
Yes. Double-pane glass must be manufactured to fit the dimensions and specifications of each opening. Glass Factory USA can produce custom-size insulated glass units for residential and commercial applications. Accurate width, height, overall thickness, glass type, and spacer measurements are essential when ordering a replacement IGU.
Can double-pane glass be tempered?
Yes. Tempered safety glass can be used in an insulated glass unit when required by building codes or the project specifications. Tempered glass is commonly used near doors, in patio doors, in bathrooms, and in other locations where safety glazing may be required. We can help determine which glass configuration is appropriate for your project.
Can decorative window grids be added between the panes?
Yes. Available grid patterns can be placed inside the sealed airspace of an insulated glass unit. Because the grids are enclosed between the panes, they do not interfere with normal glass cleaning. Available colors, patterns, and configurations depend on the size and specifications of the unit.
How long does it take to manufacture double-pane glass?
Turnaround time depends on the unit’s size, glass type, coating, safety requirements, grid configuration, material availability, and current production volume. Because Glass Factory USA manufactures insulated glass units locally in Arizona, many orders can be completed considerably faster than units ordered through an outside manufacturer. Contact us for an estimate based on your specifications.
What information do you need to provide an estimate?
Helpful information includes the approximate width and height, number of units, glass type, overall thickness, grid pattern, project location, and whether installation is needed. Photos of the existing window and any identifying markings can also be useful. If you are unsure how to measure the glass, contact us before placing an order.
Do you provide double-pane glass for commercial projects?
Yes. Glass Factory USA manufactures insulated glass units for homeowners, contractors, property managers, and commercial customers throughout Arizona. We can help with individual replacement units as well as larger orders involving multiple custom sizes and configurations.
Do you install replacement insulated glass units?
Professional installation is available for qualifying projects. Glass Factory USA can help determine whether your existing frame can accept a replacement IGU and whether glass-only replacement is the appropriate solution. Contact us with your project details, location, and photos to discuss available service options.
